Hidden from the mythical surface, Simon and Kamina grew up in a deep underground village. Simon is a bashful young child with no true goals in life, while Kamina is a free-spirited loose cannon determined to make a name for himself. Simon finds a mysterious object one day while digging in the earth. It turns out to be the ignition key to an old war relic that the two of them call Lagann. With the aid of Yoko Littner, a fiery redhead with a large gun who roams the world above, Simon and Kamina repel an unexpected attack from the surface using their new weapon. In the wake of the conflict, Now that the sky is clearly visible, Simon, Kamina, and Yoko decide to travel with Yoko to explore the surface's wastelands. They soon become involved in the battle against the "Beastmen," humanoid monsters that terrorize the last of humanity in the form of formidable robots known as "Gunmen." While slowly solving a mystery the size of a galaxy, the trio valiantly battles these new foes alongside other survivors to reclaim the surface, despite some difficulties and setbacks.
